Every so often, the impending release of an album generates a
tremendous amount of hype in a completely unforced manner,
allowing fans to have just as much to do with the marketing
process as the record label. The debut record from Destroy Rebuild
Until God Shows perfectly exemplifies this, as anticipation has
been growing since Craig Owens joined forces with producer John
Feldmann after his unexpected departure from Chiodos. Giving hints
to followers on a variety of social networking sites regarding the
nature of the music and the personnel involved, the band was
gradually introduced over a period of time. Boasting the
impressive additions of Matt Good (From First To Last), Nick
Martin (Underminded), Adam Russell (Story of the Year), and Aaron
Stern (Matchbook Romance), it became immediately apparent that
D.R.U.G.S. would be welcomed to the scene with open arms.
Fortunately, some of the best songs these seasoned musicians have
ever written appear on the band's long awaited debut album. With
metallic guitar work, aggressive drumming, and vocal hooks that
will be stuck in your head for days, Destroy Rebuild Until God
Shows have created the first great rock record of 2011.

Whether you love or hate Craig Owens, there is no denying that
D.R.U.G.S. showcases his most passionate performance yet. Opener
"If You Think This Song Is About You, It Probably Is" gets right
to the point as Owens begins to exorcise his demons with lyrics
like: "Be honest / Did you ever mention my name? / Did you get
sick of the shame? / Did you lie on your back like a whore?" This
track manages to be instantly accessible while offering enough
variation in tempo and structure to stay interesting after several
listens. "The Only Thing You Talk About" will sound familiar to
those who heard the leak of the "Thermacare" demo this past June.
Although originally intended for Chiodos, the vocal melodies and
lyrics were salvaged for Owens' new project. Benefiting from
reconstructed riffs and beefed up production, "The Only Thing You
Talk About" is a prime example of Owens looking into the future
rather than lamenting past occurrences. This is undoubtedly an
anthem of change, on a personal and professional level.

"Graveyard Dancing" brings about comparisons to My Chemical
Romance's Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, as Owens sounds
strikingly like Gerard Way during its foreboding chorus. The next
song, "Mr. Owl Ate My Metal Worm," is a personal favorite of mine
as it demonstrates what each musician involved brings to the
table. Aaron Stern particularly shines with tasteful use of double
bass drumming that is accented by electronic flourishes. What
follows is "Sex Life," arguably the most polarizing track on the
album. The promotional "sex tape" previously leaked was met with
mixed opinions: those who found the concept to be an accurate
depiction of our gossip obsessed society and those who found the
whole thing to be kind of pretentious. Either way, it got people
talking and the actual song is likely to do the same. That brings
us to "Laminated E.T. Animal," an introspective effort that still
manages to rip during the chorus; the band's ability to be
dynamically versatile is really heard here.

"Stop Reading, Start Doing Pushups" and "I'm The Rehab, You're The
Drugs" are my least favorite tracks on the record, as previous
ideas are repeated with less vigor but this short lull is redeemed
by the fresh "I'm Here to Take The Sky," a poppy ballad of sorts
that is most reminiscent of Cinematic Sunrise. Besides having
serious radio potential and being the most straightforward song on
the album, it shows that underneath all the studio tricks, Craig
Owens can genuinely carry a great melody. Stating that,
"sometimes, sometimes / hate can be so beautiful," in the
climactic and heartfelt "The Hangman" before launching into an
orchestrally accented breakdown, there is an undeniable charm to
the emotionally charged, and occasionally dramatic way that
Destroy Rebuild Until God Shows operates. With closing track, "My
Swagger Has A First Name," which spotlights Nick Martin's visceral
scream, it's clear that the D.R.U.G.S. brand will firmly be
cemented in the scene for years to come.
