- Release Notes -

Here's some new Canadian power indie pop that's blowin up atm. It's a lot of
fun, especially if you like Mates Of State and Born Ruffians.

"The four members of Toronto band Papermaps -- Dean Marino, Wendy Leung, Todd
Harrison and Bobby Lee -- have a lot in common. For one thing, they’re all
left-handed. And they were all “gifted kids” in school, which means that
people have long been asking them what went wrong on their gilded path to
respectable, lucrative careers.

Most importantly, though, the members of Papermaps share a love for making
“picture-perfect indie power pop,” influenced by bands such as Spoon, Big
Star, Television, the Beatles and MGMT. The band’s self-titled album will be
released on April 19, 2011 on Sparks Music.

Dean Marino, the band’s founder and leader, has worked behind the scenes of
music in Toronto since 2003, manning the console at Chemical Sound Recording
Studio as Assistant Engineer, then Head Engineer and eventually co-owner. He
has worked with acts including Tokyo Police Club, The Black Keys, Born
Ruffians and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. However, Dean had always been a
songwriter and performer at heart. Working off-hours, while climbing the ranks
at Chemical, he pieced together his debut album, Central Meaner Street
(released under the name EX~PO).

The record garnered positive reviews, drawing comparisons to Elliott Smith and
the Shins, and as requests for live appearances started filling his inbox,
Dean quickly realized he needed a band to tour the record. His first recruit
was Bobby Lee, known for his energetic drumming in the psych-garage outfit La
Casa Meurte and for founding the funk/soul band The Main Thing. Central Meaner
Street had many harmonies and textures that required someone who could play
keyboard and sing, and so Dean recruited Wendy Leung — a singer/songwriter who
had just finished recording a solo album, Stop/Start, at Chemical. For the
first few gigs, Dean’s business partner and collaborator, Jay Sad, filled in
on bass, but the tribulations of running a recording studio together implied
that Jay’s role was temporary. Todd Harrison, former member of local
experimental bands Trucks Leaving and Teresa’s Sound World, had discovered
Central Meaner Street and was waiting for an opening to play bass in Dean’s
band. Todd was quickly accepted into the group, and together they played a
series of Toronto gigs followed by an appearance at Halifax Pop Explosion
2009, where they supported past Chemical clients Attack in Black and local
heroes Dog Day and were met by an enthusiastic and supportive capacity crowd
at the Seahorse Tavern.

By the time the band reached the East Coast, live shows were dominated by new,
unrecorded songs written by Dean but arranged by the band as a group effort.
For the next year, the band continued to play in and around their hometown
while slowly recording what would become their next album (the first to
feature all four members on record). During this time, and after much internal
debate and brainstorming, the group renamed themselves Papermaps, formally
announcing their name change at the Silver Dollar on October 2, 2010.

Fresh off a few local warm-up shows in early 2011, the band is eager to begin
supporting the new album."
