All I really need are two notes and a beat to sing to you my heart. Its a
great place to start. These lines from the chorus from Two Notes and a Beat
tell you exactly what you are going to get from The Lonely Trees' newest
album: Arrows is nothing if not from the heart. There is no doubting why Chris
Walla chose The Lonely Forest as the first act for his new label, Trans
Records. This band knows how to write a great pop song while biting a bit
lyrically in a similar way to Wallas own band, Death Cab for Cutie. Arrows
brings you back to a day when you had more feelings than words; when you felt
lonely surrounded by people; when you wanted someone to explain the world to
you but were certain no one could.
Arrows takes those raw emotions of more nave times and translates them into
terrifically heartbreaking pop/rock songs while delivering an edge of
self-deprecation. You cant help but relate and smile at the coy way they
address these feelings. Turn Off This Song and Go Outside urges listeners to
go out and find love, and to basically step outside of their own inner
monologue. The video accentuates this return to simpler days and being kids,
with the four-piece riding bikes through a parade and lighting fireworks with
friends.
Their single, Coyote, showcases more musical layering, featuring vocal
harmonies, heavier guitars, and a seeming desperation. An anthem for the
heartbroken and mending, you will put this song on repeat.
Woe Is MeI Am Ruined explores the feelings of ruining everything one
touches, of trying to the do the right thing but never quite getting it. The
driving beat and vocal depth add to the sense of sadness and confusion.
On the straight-up poppy side of this album, youll find (I Am) The Love
Addict. Who doesnt want to be addicted to love?! The repetition of this
track makes it one that will stick in your head. The love and desire come
through in singer/guitarist/keyboardist John Van Deusens slightly less than
perfect vocals (think John K. Sampson from The Weakerthans).
The Lonely Forest has managed to capture those feelings that you once
scribbled in a diary for no one but yourself to ever read. Their lyrics are
honest and witty, and their music is catchy but without losing that rock vibe.
Arrows sounds simple on first listen, but listen again and youll find the
complexities and layers that seemed hidden while they were right there in
front of you.
Go out and get this album, and let yourself reminisce about simpler times when
you were driven by your emotions almost entirely. Or, if you arent there yet,
this album will act as your companion to help you through miserable, confusing
moments and thoughts. Arrows will bring a smile to your face and a tune for
you to hum. Its truly a great pop/rock album with intelligent writing and
solid musicianship. Go inside and listen to Arrows.
